Wild Bird Club of the Philippines Tarpaulin Artworks
Early this year, I had the honor of illustrating these brand-new tarps for the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines!
Following the waterbird tarps made for the 2024 Asian Bird Fair, talks with the Wild bird Club of the Philippines Executive Committee began as early as last year. For these new tarps, the goal was to showcase more Philippine endemic birds for their upcoming birding trips and international events.
Among the birds that I had the pleasure of illustrating are the WBCP’s very own logo bird, the Luzon Bleeding-heart; our national bird, the great Philippine Eagle; and the dazzling Palawan Peacock-pheasant! Several Luzon-endemic birds are also included with the Scale-feathered Malkoha, Luzon Hornbill, and Luzon Flameback; all of which are often seen on the WBCP’s various birding trips across Luzon.
These tarps were quite tricky to design, especially given their very narrow vertical orientation. We were able to make it work by filling the empty edges with vibrant Philippine native plants to complement each bird species.
The pairings are as follows:
Luzon Bleeding-heart and Rafflesia lagascae
Philippine Eagle and Vanda sanderiana
Scale-feathered Malkoha and Strongylodon macrobotrys
Luzon Flameback and Illigera luzonensis
Palawan Peacock-pheasant and Paphiopedilum fowliei
Luzon Hornbill and Adonidia merrillii
I’ve showcased 2 of these designs on Instagram as a fun little teaser for their release.
Although these tarps were finished early this year, in time for the 1st-ever World Bird Fair, production took a bit of a back seat. But the debut was still in sight!
These tarps had their official debut during the 2025 Asian Bird Fair in Seosan, South Korea!
