Birds of Fraser’s Hill, Malaysia
June 22, 2025
With 36 years under its belt, the Fraser's Hill International Bird Race is proof that local and international community engagement can lead to the conservation and protection of local wildlife. Malaysia is naturally home to a diverse array of wildlife, and a birding site like Fraser's Hill boasts an incredible concentration that is easily accessible to birdwatchers worldwide. An event like a Bird Race allows the world to see and experience various birds found in that area. Photographs like these are a testament to fruitful conservation and protection in a key birding site.
Although our stay in Malaysia was short, these are some of the many colorful birds we spotted during the 2025 Fraser's Hill International Bird Race.
A couple of our highlights include a close encounter with a female Lesser Shortwing, shy Grey-throated Babblers, a Black-browed Barbet excavating a cavity, and a quick glimpse of a Long-tailed Broadbill.
When it comes to the WBPP favorites, well, our day 1 with Sultan Tits, Orange-bellied Leafbirds, and Black-throated Sunbirds in a single birding site is an incredible highlight for the Team! Silver-eared Mesias on feeding stations is always a great choice.
However, personally, my favorite is the adorable Silver-breasted Broadbill!

It’s been a crazy ride representing the Wild Bird Photographers of the Philippines for this year’s photography competition. Luckily, we were able to clinch 4th place in the photography competition through my dad, Alain Pascua, with his Peregrine Falcon action shot hehe!
As a first time birder in one of Malaysia’s most revered birding sites, this bird race was an eye-opening experience that showcases the enormous potential of how birding can shape international and local communities together to advocate for wildlife protection and forest conservation.
And of course, we got a lot of lifers and amazing photographs for keeps along the way! A couple of my personal favorites include the bizarre Sultan Tit and the adorable Silver-breasted Broadbill!
Many thanks to the organizers for inviting the Wild Bird Photographers of the Philippines to participate and represent the Philippines in the bird photography contest. We’re glad to have connected with a lot of new birders from all over the world and to have reconnected with familiar faces from Malaysia, Vietnam, Taiwan, and Singapore once again (especially coming from the recent Vietnam Bird Race hehe!).
Shoutout to our fellow Filipino delegates from Haribon and Birders Anonymous for all the kwentuhans and the bird watching experiences made along the trails!
We extend our sincerest gratitude to Mr. Henry Goh, Tourism Pahang Malaysia, and Bukit Fraser for their competence and generosity in making this event possible!
Maraming Salamat! (Thank you very much!)
