Lo-fi Drawings
Throughout the Pandemic, I made several lo-fi drawings to convey my feelings of isolation throughout these trying times. The lo-fi genre sparked my interest since it filled up my void with an ambiance to accompany my daily life. Most of these pieces reflected on my mood and realizations that got me through the initial months of lockdown. Although the effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic persist until today, looking back at these old works reminded me that I could get through each hardship one day at a time.
PALETTE Based on IU's song, Palette is a mirror vertical inverse image that shows the inevitable change for a person to grow up. It is shown by the multiple objects (earphones, drawings) falling from above to replace the objects generally associated with one's youth (shoes, toys, rose). In a world where face to face interactions are limited, one can quickly wonder an existential crisis that'll change one's outlook on life. I used the colors that I'm most comfortable with for this piece. It's my Palette that I use for anything art related, and I like it.
TIMELESS As I started to work on this piece, I was listening to one of my favorite songs: IU's "Above the Time," its lyrics became the basis of this artwork. "Above the Time" is a song is about two people longing to meet each other after a long time in isolation. During this time, it's hard to connect with people since we're not allowed to go outside because of this pandemic. TIMELESS is like a mirror image of PALETTE. There are elements present in both artworks meant to reflect that both of their situations are similar: tired and longing to see others after this is all over. It's hard to think of what will happen in the future, trying to connect now won't be the same as it was face to face.
SOMEDAY This piece was made to reflect a chill and cozy vibe with a sense of hope. I made this piece while listening to IZ*ONE's song with the same title. We are at a point where we are dependent on everything happening on our screens; we yearn for the next time we get to meet one another again. Isolation is a theme that is hard to grasp, and I try my best to reflect it in my works as it describes the situation I, along with a bunch of other people, are currently dealing with. In my school, we have a "bridging program" that makes students learn supplementary material from the previous school year and connect with their teachers from time to time. Although we are still in a transition period, multiple things still severely affect our mental and emotional state. Our longing to meet other people is only ever-growing as each day passes by, and hopefully, someday, this will all be over.
WARMTH Don't forget to rest when you feel a bit down. There are moments where we feel weak, unimportant, or unstable. Sometimes it's challenging to maintain a steady mindset to get through the day alone. There are difficult days ahead, but we can make it.
JOURNEY It's a lonely road, but at least there are rays of light that give you hope. Most of the time, you are alone in your journey but don't forget that you have to have a little light in you to guide your way. I was at a whole new level of a bad mood for the past week, so I decided to take a break and draw something to relieve stress. Everything will be alright; there will be better days ahead.
SAYONARA Flowers fall and gaze through the blue night. Having dreams embracing each other while being frightened for the eventual day, we say goodbye. Amidst the scars from our first and last moment, like a flower, we'll heal and bloom in full glory.
